    Book details

For Julie and Peter Hauser, the kidnapping and murder of their only child is just the beginning. Tortured by the unspoken accusations of the local police, unable to conceive again or to cope with the loss of little Peter, they leave Vermont for a new life in the small town of Carswell, Massachusetts.
But they cannot so easily escape the evil forces that seem to manipulate them at every turn, plunging them slowly into an inferno of horror.
Carswell is in the grip of a serial killer known as 'the Carswell Ripper,' who has raped and savagely mutilated three young girls. Amid her growing estrangement from Peter, Julie begins to see a correlation between the Ripper's attacks and the mysterious blackouts he has suffered since leaving Vermont.
Even more frightening are her dreams, which in the past have accurately foretold dire events to come, including the death of her son, and now seem to connect the Ripper with her husband. Yet Julie cannot make herself believe that Peter could possibly be a bloodthirsty and demented killer.
Roger Sarris, an ambitious newsman at the radio station where Peter works, introduces him to the sultry but unnerving Maria Renata, who claims to be a witch and boasts that she can make Peter unfaithful. She simultaneously intrigues and infuriates Peter by viciously biting his hand at the conclusion of their first meeting.
Roger's own desire for Maria combines with his reporter's instincts when he discovers that she may have information leading to the Ripper. But in pursuing her, Roger is playing with fire - hellfire, to be exact. Beginning to doubt her own sanity, Julie visits psychic consultant Adrian Stiles for help in interpreting her increasingly troublesome dreams.
From Stiles she learns of Atavar, the Old One, an ancient god who was banished to a nether world beneath the sea and will grant the innermost desire of whomever resurrects him.
In a desperate bid to start life anew by bringing her son back from the dead, Julie allies herself to Atavar's dreadful force.
She steals the arcane volume containing the necessary rituals and begins to conjure up Atavar on a lonely, windswept beach.
But what she calls forth is so huge, so monstrous that it blots the very moon from the sky.
Hope soon turns to terror as Julie confronts an ageless, infernal power whose reign would crush the world while having to dealing with the savage thirst of the vicious Ripper at the same time.
To send both creatures back to the hell from whence they sprang, Julie must summon every ounce of courage she possesses, and resort to any means necessary, even the most forbidden.
